A small falcon with a steady gaze

The Nankeen Kestrel is a familiar companion of open Australian landscapes. Warm reddish-brown upperparts and a pale underside brighten its compact silhouette. It often hovers into the wind while searching for insects, reptiles and small mammals, bringing a remarkable display of aerial control to paddocks, grasslands and coastal cliffs.

Where to look

Widespread across Australia, including east-coast open habitats.
